Early life and background

Hrishita Niladri Basu was born on 30 January 2004 in Howrah, West Bengal. Raised in a Bengali family with a strong sporting background, she grew up participating in multiple games at school and playing informal street cricket in her neighborhood. Her early exposure to athletics included basketball, football and kho-kho, and she has said her family encouraged an active childhood: her father played cricket and her mother was a gymnast. Hrishita attended St. Thomas’ Church School in Howrah.

At the age of 13 she began formal cricket training by joining LRS Bangla Sports Academy, run by former Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla. Her development at the academy set the path for selection to age-group representative sides.

Career

Hrishita is a right-handed batter who also keeps wicket. She progressed through Bengal’s youth system and was selected for the Bengal Under-19 women’s side at 15, although her debut came later after pandemic-related interruptions. In her first recorded appearance for Bengal against Goa she played a pivotal innings of 43 runs in a difficult position when the team had lost seven wickets for 19, a performance that helped secure victory and earned praise from coaches.

She has represented India A in various under-19 fixtures, including the Women’s Under-19 T20 Challenger Trophy in 2022 and the Quadrangular Women’s Under-19 T20 Series that same year, a tournament India A won. Later in 2022 she was named in India’s Under-19 women’s squad for home matches against New Zealand and for a tour of South Africa.

The following year Hrishita was selected in India’s squad for the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup held in South Africa in early 2023. The Indian team won the tournament, defeating England in the final at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, with the squad that included several leading young players from across the country.
