Early life and background

Humaira Nusrat Himu was born in Lakshmipur, Bangladesh, and grew up taking part in school stage productions. After finishing her Secondary School Certificate exams in Lakshmipur, she moved to Dhaka in 1999 to pursue a career in theatre. In Dhaka she joined the Nagorik Natyangan group and later worked with multiple local theatre ensembles and cultural organisations, laying the groundwork for a transition into television acting.

Career

Himu began her screen career with a film role in Amar Bondhu Rashed (2011), where she appeared as Aru Apa. She also worked in television from early on, taking parts in telefilms and serials. In 2008 she featured in the Channel i Classic serial Ghor Kutum alongside Chanchal Chowdhury. Over the following years she appeared in a steady stream of TV projects across Bangladeshi channels.

Her television credits include the Banglavision series Choumohol (2011); the ATN Bangla drama DB (2014), in which she played a detective branch officer; and Chairman Bari (2014) on Boishakhi TV, where she portrayed a character named Shanta. In 2018 she took on a negative role in the Boishakhi TV series Shonghat, and in 2019 she performed in the comedy Chaya Bibi with Monira Akter Mithu for the same channel.

Himu also received notable recognition for her performance in the drama series Tomar Doyai Valo Achi Ma, broadcast on the Fahim Music channel. Other television appearances included shows titled Ek Mela Doi Pocket, Ganyer Manush, KaNcher Ful, Moti Behara, Shonena She Shonena, and Uttoradhikar. In addition to serial work, she appeared in television commercials for various brands.

Public profile

She adopted the professional name Humaira Himu in 2005, shortening her original name, Humaira Nusrat Himu, to a two-word stage name. Physically, she was described as approximately 165 cm tall (about 5 feet 6 inches) with black eyes and dark brown hair. Himu was Bangladeshi by nationality and her zodiac sign was Scorpio.

Personal life and family

Himu was the only child of her parents. Her father, Sana Ullah, who worked as an engineer, died in August 2022. Her mother, Shamim Ara Chowdhury, died in 2020 from COVID-19. At the time of her death she was unmarried.

Death and aftermath

Humaira Himu died on 2 November 2023 at age 37 in Dhaka. The reported cause of death was suicide by hanging. She was buried on 3 November 2023 at Lamchari Jame Masjid in Lakshmipur, beside her mother’s grave.

Following an investigation into her death, a friend named Mohammad Ziauddin Rufi (also referred to as Urfi Zia) was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion and identified by authorities as the accused in the case. Reports stated that Ziauddin acknowledged disputes with Himu over money and marriage, and said she had previously threatened to end her life. Authorities reported that after discovering her condition, Ziauddin took her to Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital but left before police arrived. During the investigation he also stated that Himu had spent money on online gambling over the prior two to three years via an app called Bigo Live.
