Early life and background

Hurley Tanmay Gala was born on 19 September 2006 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She grew up in a Gujarati family in a multi-generational household that includes her parents, a younger sister, grandparents and extended relatives. Her father, Tanmay Gala, runs an internet and cable service business in Juhu, while her mother, Bhavika Gala, is a homemaker.

As a child Hurley was athletic and tried several sports. She began with skating at school and competed at state and national levels until an ankle injury around age 11 forced her to take a year off. During that hiatus her father encouraged her to try cricket; she began playing in local recreational tennis-ball competitions for her housing society and soon moved to formal training.

Education

Hurley attended Utpal Shanghvi Global School until Class 7. Because the school did not have a girls' cricket team and she wanted better opportunities to pursue the sport, she later moved to St. Columba School in Grant Road, Mumbai.

Cricket beginnings and development

Hurley's entry into structured cricket began when a family acquaintance connected her to local coaching resources. She trained at the Negev Cricket Academy in Juhu under Ivan Rodrigues and later honed her skills at MIG Cricket Club in Bandra with guidance from coaches including Prashant Shetty, Venancio D’Souza and Sachin Jagtap. She first faced a leather ball around age 12.

Initially interested in batting, her coaches identified attributes—core strength, agility and pace suitability—that led them to develop her as a fast bowler. Her performances for school and club teams earned attention: she delivered a hat-trick in a Mumbai School Sports Association semi-final and played a decisive role in the Late Madhvi Women’s Trophy, which helped propel her into Mumbai state selection.

Domestic and junior international career

Hurley made her List A debut for Mumbai on 3 November 2021 in the Women's Senior One Day Trophy. Early in that series she registered notable dismissals, including Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma in successive matches. She represented Mumbai in domestic competitions and was part of India’s Under-19 set-up that toured with the New Zealand Under-19s in 2022, a series in which the India side won all matches.

In 2022 she was also part of India A that won the Quadrangular Women’s U19 T20 Series; India A secured victory by 77 runs in the final. Hurley was later named in India’s squad for the ICC Women’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in January 2023 in South Africa. She was withdrawn from the tournament on 17 January 2023 after suffering a laceration to her right thumb and was replaced in the squad; India went on to win the World Cup on 29 January 2023.

In the inaugural Women’s Premier League auction in February 2023 Hurley was acquired by the Gujarat Giants for Rs 10 lakh.
