Early life and background

Ian Cardozo was born on 7 August 1937 in the Bombay Presidency of British India. He grew up in an environment that encouraged sports and reading about military history, and he completed his schooling at St. Xavier's High School, Mumbai. He went on to attend St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, before enrolling in the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. At the NDA he distinguished himself by earning both the silver and gold medals, a notable achievement among cadets.

Military career

Cardozo was commissioned into the Indian Army in the mid-1950s and served from 1954 until his retirement in 1993. He served with 1/5 and 4/5 Gorkha Rifles and rose to the rank of Major General. Early in his career he was deployed to frontier postings, including Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh, and he saw active service in the 1962 conflict with China.

His most widely recounted experiences come from the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Serving with Gorkha units, Cardozo was seriously wounded by a land mine during operations. With field medical facilities compromised, he lost a leg and was subsequently treated by a captured Pakistani surgeon. Refusing to be sidelined after his injury, Cardozo insisted on returning to field duties and set out to prove his fitness. He successfully persuaded army leadership of his capability and went on to become the first war-disabled officer in the Indian Army to command a battalion and later a brigade.

Over the course of his service Cardozo received multiple honours, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Sena Medal. He completed a long career that culminated in senior staff responsibilities and command appointments; he retired as the chief of staff of a corps in Assam.

Public service and later work

After leaving active service, Cardozo continued to work in areas related to rehabilitation and veterans' welfare. From 2005 to 2011 he served as Chairman of the Rehabilitation Council of India. In his early 60s he turned to writing and published 1971: Stories of Grit and Glory From The Indo-Pak War, a book that collects accounts from that conflict.

Cardozo has also remained active physically. He is a marathon participant and in 2019 took part in the Mumbai Marathon along with other war-disabled former soldiers.

Personal life

Cardozo married Priscilla in 1966. The couple have three sons: Arun, Sunith, and Vikram. His parents are named Vincent and Diana Cardozo. He is known to be non-vegetarian. Physically, listings describe him as approximately 1.73 m tall with black eyes and grey hair.

Public profile

Ian Cardozo is widely recognized for his resilience and for challenging military norms regarding the roles available to disabled officers. His persistence contributed to a relaxation of regulations that previously limited the promotion prospects of soldiers injured in battle. He is remembered for a direct, action-driven approach to leadership and for a personal philosophy that emphasizes doing what one loves and not giving up.
