Early life and background

Ilaiyaraaja was born Gnanathesikan (also known as Daniel Rajayya) on 2 June 1943 in Pannaipuram in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a rural, economically modest family and developed an early interest in Tamil folk traditions; his mother was noted for her knowledge of Tamil folk songs. He spent part of his youth in theatre and music groups led by his elder step-brother, which gave him practical exposure to performance and composition.

He pursued formal musical study as well, attending Trinity College of Music in London where he earned a degree in Western art music and later received a gold medal for classical guitar. His training combined Western classical techniques with the vernacular sounds he had absorbed in his upbringing.

Career

Ilaiyaraaja began his career as a session musician and assistant to established composers. He worked as a keyboardist, guitarist and organist, and served as an assistant to the Kannada composer G. K. Venkatesh, contributing to many projects and developing skills in orchestration and score-writing. He also collaborated with R. K. Shekhar as a keyboardist during his early years.

His breakthrough as a music director came in 1976 when he was offered the soundtrack for the Tamil film Annakili. For that project he blended modern orchestration with Tamil folk melodies, a characteristic approach that would become a hallmark of his work. Over the following decades he composed prolifically for cinema and non-film projects.

Ilaiyaraaja's output includes thousands of songs and hundreds of film scores across multiple Indian languages. He is credited with providing background music for more than 840 films and composing in excess of 6,000 songs. His work ranges from film soundtracks to devotional pieces and large-scale oratorios. Notable non-film albums cited in his discography include How To Name It? and Nothing But Wind, both of which fuse Indian and Western classical forms.

He has also ventured into concert work and orchestral composition. In 1993 he became the first Asian composer to create a symphony with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He later composed Thiruvasagam – A Symphonic Oratorio with the Symphony Orchestra of Budapest, bringing together hundreds of musicians from India and abroad to meld eastern and western musical textures.

Throughout his career, Ilaiyaraaja has collaborated with leading lyricists, vocalists and filmmakers. Singers from multiple generations and genres have performed his compositions, and eminent directors across regional cinemas engaged him to score their films. He has lent his own voice to many of his works and has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi cinema.
