Early life and background

Illuri Ajay Kumar Reddy was born on 3 June 1990 in Macherla, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in a farming family. An accident at age four caused blindness in his left eye and progressive vision loss in his right eye. He attended regular school until around sixth grade but moved to Lutheran High School for the Blind in Narasaraopeta at age 12, where he discovered blind cricket.

He continued his education in Hyderabad, studying at Aliya Government Junior College (affiliated with Osmania University) from 2008 to 2011, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in sports and exercise, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Telugu literature from Nizam College.

Career

Ajay Kumar Reddy’s introduction to organized blind cricket came after a state-level trial in 2006, when he was selected for the Andhra Pradesh blind cricket team. He made his ODI debut in 2010 and played T20 internationals from 2012.

Over the years he established himself as an allrounder and wicket-keeper for the Indian blind cricket side. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast, with the sweep identified as a preferred scoring shot. He has played in the B2 classification (clear vision up to six meters).

Reddy rose to captain the Indian blind team and led it through a highly successful period. As a player he was part of the side that won the 2012 Blind T20 World Cup and the 2014 Blind Cricket World Cup. He became captain in 2016 and guided India to victory in the inaugural Blind T20 Asia Cup that year. Under his leadership the team won the 2017 Blind T20 World Cup, in which he took nine wickets, and he led India to the 2018 Blind Cricket World Cup title (40 overs). He captained the side to another T20 World Cup win in 2022, completing a run of T20 World Cup successes, and also led the team to a silver medal at the IBSA World Games in 2023.

Across more than a decade of international play, Reddy accumulated a large number of individual match and series awards, earning over 80 Man of the Match awards and more than 50 Man of the Series awards according to available records.

In recognition of his contributions to para cricket, he received the Arjuna Award for 2023; the honour was presented on 9 January 2024.

Alongside his sporting career, Reddy has worked in banking. After finishing his studies he joined the State Bank of Hyderabad as a clerk. Following the merger of SBH with the State Bank of India in 2017, he was promoted to Deputy Manager in May 2020. He has also delivered motivational speeches at schools and colleges.

Reddy has spoken publicly about the economic and recognition challenges faced by blind cricketers, stressing that the team’s achievements deserve acknowledgment beyond sympathy.
