Early life and background

Indira Banerjee was born on 24 September 1957 in Kolkata, West Bengal. She grew up in Kolkata and completed her school education at Loreto House. She earned a bachelor’s degree in History (Honours) from Presidency College, Kolkata, and later studied law at the Department of Law, University of Calcutta.

Career

Banerjee began practising as an advocate at the Calcutta High Court on 5 July 1985, developing experience on both the original and appellate sides. She was appointed a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on 5 February 2002. While at Calcutta High Court she chaired the Calcutta High Court Services Committee for four years and served as Executive Chairperson of the West Bengal State Legal Services Authority for a year.

In July 2013 she took part in a training programme in judicial administration at the Civil Service College in Singapore, an appointment that lasted for a week.

She moved to the Delhi High Court as a judge on 8 August 2016 and served there until April 2017. During her tenure in Delhi she was the chairperson of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority.

On 5 April 2017 Banerjee assumed charge as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. She was the second woman to head that court. Her term as Chief Justice continued until 6 August 2018.

On 7 August 2018 she was elevated to the Supreme Court of India. She remained on the Supreme Court bench until her superannuation on 24 September 2022. During her time on the Supreme Court she was among the women judges on the court and participated in several notable decisions, including judgments listed from 2019 and 2020 such as Dattatraya v. The State of Maharashtra, State of Haryana v. Angoori Devi and Ors., Rajendra Diwan v. Pradeep Kumar Ranibala and Ors., and Sushila Aggarwal and Ors. v. State (NCT of Delhi) and Ors.
