Indra Kumar, born Indra Irani, hails from Botad in Gujarat and grew up in a family involved in the performing arts. His father, Faredoon Irani, ran a drama troupe, and his mother, Shaguna Irani, worked as an actress. One of his elder sisters, Aruna Irani, later played a central role in supporting the family after their mother’s death. Indra’s schooling took place in Mumbai, where he attended Utpal Shanghvi Global School and Ascend International School.

Career

Indra Kumar’s screen career began as an actor. His first credited appearance in Hindi cinema came in 1968, and over the 1970s and 1980s he performed in both Hindi and regional films, including Gujarati and Assamese projects. He made his Gujarati film debut in 1980 and appeared in several Gujarati-language titles through the mid-1980s.

By the mid-1980s Indra expanded into production. He co-founded Maruti Films Private Limited with Ashok Navalkumar Thakeria and produced his first film in 1985. A few years later he moved into directing. His directorial debut in Hindi features came with Dil (1990), and during the 1990s he directed several mainstream films including Beta (1992), Raja (1995) and Mann-Soul’s Heart (1999). Raja earned him nominations at the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Film.

In the 2000s Indra found notable commercial success in comedy and ensemble filmmaking. He directed Dhamaal (2007) and its follow-up Double Dhamaal (2011), and later entries in his comedy repertoire included Grand Masti (2013), Great Grand Masti (2016) and Thank God (2022). Grand Masti achieved significant box-office recognition and was one of the films for which he and his producing partner were awarded at the Bollywood Business Awards in 2014.

Throughout his career Indra has discussed the choices and risks behind casting decisions and genre shifts. For the 2022 film Thank God he spoke about casting an actor known more for dramatic work in a comedic role and defended that choice after questions were raised about the actor’s suitability for comedy. He has also spoken publicly about never having worked with Amitabh Bachchan and cited scheduling and production choices as reasons that opportunity did not materialize.
