Early life and background

Indrani Mukerjea was born Pori Bora on 22 November 1972 in Guwahati, Assam. She grew up in that city and completed her schooling there before attending Lady Keane College in Shillong, where she graduated. Her parents are named Upendra Kumar Bora and Durga Rani Bora.

Mukerjea’s early adult life included relationships and family responsibilities. She has three children: two daughters, Sheena Bora (born February 1987) and Vidhie Mukerjea (born 1997), and a son, Mikhail Bora (born September 1988). Sheena and Mikhail are from an earlier relationship with Siddhartha Das; Vidhie is from her marriage to Sanjeev Khanna. Later in life she married Peter Mukerjea in November 2002; Peter subsequently adopted Vidhie. Indrani holds British nationality, a status she acquired in 2012 through her marriage to Peter Mukerjea.

Career

Indrani Mukerjea began her professional life in the human resources and recruitment sector. In 1996 she founded INX Services Private Limited, a recruitment company based in Kolkata. Over the following years she expanded her footprint in executive search and human resources, working with large corporate clients. In 2005 her company allied with IMD International Search Group and she became the regional director for Asia Pacific.

In 2006 Mukerjea and her then-husband Peter Mukerjea became promoters of the INX Group, which included HR businesses such as INX Services and INX Executive Search and media ventures including INX Media and INX News. She rose to the role of CEO of the INX group in 2007. The group, however, was affected by the global financial downturn of 2007–08 and accumulated significant losses. By March 2009 the company was carrying high debt, and the Mukerjeas resigned from management roles and sold their shares in April 2010; they left the board in May 2011.

Indrani’s profile broadened beyond business. In 2008 she received recognition as one of ‘‘50 Women to Watch’’ from the Wall Street Journal and was awarded a title from Uttar Bhartiya Mahasangh. Her career and personal life drew media attention over time, including disputes at INX News that led to resignations and legal action related to the company’s operations and funding.

Her life drew intense public scrutiny after 2012, when her daughter Sheena Bora went missing. In 2015 Mumbai Police arrested Indrani in connection with Sheena’s alleged murder and she was incarcerated. The case involved multiple investigative agencies and raised questions about financial transactions linked to INX Media. During court proceedings Indrani made public statements about aspects of her childhood and family history.

While detained she said she had worked on translating verses of the Bhagavad Gita into English and later published a memoir, Unbroken The Untold Story, in 2023. After years awaiting trial, Indrani Mukerjea was granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2022, following more than six years in custody, with the court noting that significant witness testimony was still pending and that the trial could continue for some time. A documentary about her life, titled The Indrani Mukherjee Story: Buried Truth, premiered on Netflix in February 2024.
