Early life and background

Indrani Ivy Roy was born on 5 September 1997 in Liluah, Howrah, West Bengal. Raised in a Bengali family, she attended Sunrise (English Medium) School in Howrah and later studied at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University in Faizabad, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. She grew up interested in sports and developed a particular passion for cricket during her teenage years.

Roy first encountered organized cricket around class 8 when she noticed a nearby coaching centre. She began playing at about age 15, but paused for two years because of school pressures. A coach, Pachu Gopal Majhi, convinced her parents to let her return to the sport, and she resumed playing while in class 10. Early practice often involved playing with boys from state and first-division teams, a challenge that helped sharpen her skills.

Career

Indrani Roy is a right-handed batter and a wicket-keeper who has also bowled right-arm medium fast. She represented the Bengal U-19 side beginning in 2014 and was part of the squad that won the national championship in the 2014–15 season. In 2017 she moved to the Jharkhand Women’s team to seek greater opportunities behind the stumps, and played in inter-district competitions for Bokaro under the Jharkhand State Cricket Association.

While with Jharkhand, Roy featured in the U-23 Challenger Trophy and was named to India Blue in 2018 and India C in 2019 for domestic Challenger tournaments. In the 2019–20 Women’s Senior One Day Trophy she recorded an unbeaten century, scoring 132 not out in a match that helped Jharkhand progress in the competition before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020–21 Senior Women’s One Day League was a breakout domestic season for Roy. She scored two centuries and finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 456 runs from eight matches. That form led to a national call-up in May 2021, when she was included in India’s touring squad for the England tour across Test, WODI and WT20I formats, although she did not appear in a match on that tour.

Roy has continued to play at domestic level, including representing Railways in the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy in 2023. Ahead of the inaugural Women’s Premier League in 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought her at auction for Rs. 10 lakh.
