Early life and background

Inzamam-ul-Haq was born on 3 March 1970 in Multan, Pakistan. He grew up in a family originally from Hansi (then part of pre-Partition India) and was raised in Multan, where he later attended Government Emerson College. Standing about 6 feet 3 inches tall, Inzamam developed into a powerful right-handed batsman who would become one of Pakistan’s most prolific run scorers.

Career

Inzamam made his One Day International debut on 22 November 1991 against the West Indies at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium and played his first Test on 4 June 1992 at Edgbaston against England. He appeared in a single T20 international on 28 August 2006 in Bristol, England. He retired from international cricket following the second Test against South Africa in 2007.

Across a distinguished Test career of 120 matches, Inzamam amassed 8,830 runs in 200 innings at an average of 49.60. His Test record includes a highest score of 329, one triple century, two double centuries, 25 centuries and 46 fifties. He faced over 16,000 deliveries in Tests and completed his career with 81 catches.

In One Day Internationals he played 378 matches and scored 11,739 runs in 350 innings at an average of 39.52, with a strike rate of 74.24. His top ODI score was an unbeaten 137, and his limited-overs résumé contains 10 centuries and 83 fifties. Inzamam also took 113 catches in ODIs. He was part of Pakistan’s World Cup campaigns across five tournaments from 1992 through 2007 and played a key cameo of 60 off 37 balls in the 1992 World Cup semi-final.

Though primarily a batsman, Inzamam bowled very occasionally at the international level. He delivered a handful of overs in Tests and ODIs, recording three ODI wickets and conceding only a small number of runs. As a leader, he captained Pakistan in Tests and ODIs, leading the Test side in 31 matches with 11 wins and 10 losses, and captaining the ODI team in 89 matches, with 52 wins and 33 defeats.

Domestic and other roles

Before establishing himself at the international level, Inzamam played for Multan’s under‑19 side and turned out domestically for teams including United Bank Limited, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, National Bank of Pakistan and the Water and Power Development Authority. Later in his career he participated in the Indian Cricket League in 2007.

After retiring as a player, Inzamam moved into coaching and selection roles. He served as head coach of Afghanistan in late 2015 and was appointed chief selector of the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2016, a post he held until 2019. He was again named chief selector in August 2023 and resigned from that position on 30 October 2023 amid concerns about a potential conflict of interest.

Records and honours

Inzamam finished his international career as Pakistan’s highest ODI run-scorer and the leading Pakistani run accumulator across formats with more than 20,500 international runs. He holds Pakistan’s second-highest individual Test score (329) and at one time held the world record for most ODI fifties by a player.
