Early life and background

Isa Tara Guha was born on 21 May 1985 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England. Of Indian heritage, her family originally came from Calcutta (now Kolkata). She grew up playing cricket alongside her older brother and joined a local club as a youngster. That early immersion led to selection for youth representative sides, and she progressed through England’s under-17 and under-19 ranks.

Guha attended Wycombe High School and went on to study at University College London, completing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and later an MPhil in neuroscience. She has described running, weights, yoga and Pilates as part of her personal fitness routine and enjoys time by the sea and social meals with friends.

Cricket career

A right-handed batter and right-arm fast-medium bowler, Guha made her international debut as a teenager. She played her first One Day International in August 2001 and made her Test debut in August 2002. Over a career that ran through to the early 2010s she represented England in Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals and was part of several landmark England campaigns.

Guha built a reputation as a consistent wicket taker. In her international career she took over 100 wickets in ODIs and claimed multiple five-wicket hauls across formats, including a standout 5 for 14 in an ODI against West Indies in 2008 and a 5 for 40 in a Test against Australia in February 2008. Those performances helped her rise to the top of the ICC Women’s One Day International bowling rankings at the end of 2008.

She featured in England sides that achieved major honours, including the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2009 and Ashes success. Guha announced her retirement from international cricket on 9 March 2012 at age 27, citing ongoing back problems and the practicalities of the semi-professional structure in the women’s game. After stepping away from international duty she continued to play county cricket for Berkshire.

Following retirement from England duty, Guha moved into media and broadcasting. She began writing columns for the BBC Sports website and joined ITV Sport in April 2012, becoming a co-presenter for ITV4’s Indian Premier League coverage. Her broadcast role has expanded to include television and radio commentary, and she was part of commentary teams for Australian Test coverage and the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In 2020 she served as lead presenter for a BBC TV Test and ODI highlights show.

Guha has also worked across other major sporting events, anchoring coverage of the Rio Olympics for ESPN. She has received industry recognition for her broadcasting work, including an award from Fox Sports naming her the world’s best female cricket commentator in March 2021.
