Ishan Kishan Biography

Left-handed wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan emerged from Nawada, Bihar to become one of India’s most explosive young batsmen. Known for aggressive stroke

Early life and background

Ishan Kishan was born on 18 July 1998 in Nawada, Bihar. He grew up in Patna where his family moved a few months after his birth so he could pursue cricket. He attended Delhi Public School in Patna and later studied at the College of Commerce, Arts & Science (COCAS), Patna. He completed schooling up to the 12th grade.

As a child he accompanied his older brother to matches and was spotted by coach Uttam Majumdar, who encouraged Kishan’s parents to support his training. His formative years included intense practice routines designed to build a complete game: large numbers of throw-downs and shadow batting to develop front-foot and back-foot strokes. He played school and age-group cricket from an early age, representing Patna Under-16 and later moving to Ranchi to continue his development when Bihar’s registration issues limited opportunities in the domestic circuit.

Career

Kishan’s domestic breakthrough came young. He represented Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy from his mid-teens and became the state’s leading run-scorer in the 2017–18 Ranji season. In limited-overs domestic cricket he amassed significant runs in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also turned out for corporate and board sides including SAIL and ONGC and featured for various India A and India age-group teams.

At age 17 he entered the Indian Premier League when Gujarat Lions bought him in 2016. After two seasons with Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians acquired him at the 2018 auction. He has been associated with Mumbai Indians since 2018, wearing the IPL jersey number 23. In the 2020 IPL season he played 14 matches for Mumbai Indians, scoring 516 runs and hitting 30 sixes — the most by any player that season.

On the international stage Kishan captained India’s Under-19 side at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup. He made his senior T20 international debut on 14 March 2021 against England and scored a fifty on debut. His ODI debut followed in July 2021 against Sri Lanka, and he became the youngest player to score an ODI double century when he struck 210 off 131 balls against Bangladesh on 10 December 2022 — a list of records that included the highest ODI score in Bangladesh and the fastest ODI double hundred at that time.

He made his Test debut on 12 July 2023 against the West Indies. Throughout his career Kishan has been used as a left-handed top-order batter who can keep wickets when required. His favorite shot is the pull and he has been coached and mentored by figures including Santosh Kumar, Ajit Mishra and Uttam Majumdar.

Public profile

Kishan’s playing style — aggressive and big-hitting — has made him a prominent figure in Indian cricket. He has earned nicknames such as "Pocket Dynamo" and "Chota Dynamite" that reflect his compact frame and explosive approach. Physically he is listed at about 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) and around 65 kg. He wears jersey number 32 for India.

Off the field he has interests that include badminton, football, cycling, travel and video games. He launched a clothing brand named IK Clothing in 2021 and is listed as the owner of a company named Ishan. He is known to collect watches and owns several high-end timepieces. His family background is part of his public identity: his father Pranav Kumar Pandey is described as a builder and politician and his mother is Suchitra Singh. He has a brother, Raj Kishan, and a sister, Arya Singh.

Kishan has also faced moments of public scrutiny that received media attention, including a road accident in Patna in 2016 and a few on-field incidents and selection decisions that were discussed publicly. He has tattoos and ear piercings and follows Hindu practices.

Latest updates

Kishan continued to be an active member of the Indian international setup and Mumbai Indians in the IPL through the early 2020s. Notable recent milestones include his ODI double century for India against Bangladesh in December 2022 and his Test debut in July 2023.

He holds several records for his teams, including a high score of 273 for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy and several international and domestic distinctions tied to his ODI double century. On the IPL front he was among the more highly valued Indian players during auction seasons and has been a leading six-hitter for his franchise.

Personal notes

Kishan remains unmarried. He lists favourite cricketers and role models such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli, and his preferred stadium is the Wankhede in Mumbai. He follows a sporty, adventurous lifestyle and has been candid about the hard work that shaped his game from a very young age.
