Early life and background

Ishant Vijay Sharma was born on 2 September 1988 in Delhi, India. He grew up in the same city and attended Ganga International School. Ishant left formal education after completing the 10th standard to concentrate on a professional cricket career. He comes from a family headed by his father, Vijay Sharma, and mother, Grisha Sharma, and has an elder sister named Eva.

Career

A tall right-arm fast bowler standing about 1.91 m (6'3"), Ishant made a rapid ascent through India's youth and domestic structures. He represented Delhi in domestic cricket and progressed into international cricket while still very young. Early in his career he earned recognition for raw pace and an aggressive approach on the field.

Ishant's international milestones include becoming one of the youngest players to reach 100 Test wickets. A significant landmark came in February 2021 when he joined the 300-Test wicket club, becoming one of only a few Indian pace bowlers to reach that milestone. Two performances often cited as turning points were a hostile spell to Ricky Ponting in Perth in 2008 and a seven-wicket match haul at Lord's that helped India to a rare Test victory there.

In franchise cricket, Ishant has played in the Indian Premier League for multiple teams. He was with Kolkata Knight Riders from 2008 to 2010, then represented Deccan Chargers in 2011 and 2012, and later joined Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2013 onward. In 2023 he returned to the IPL after a two-year absence and produced an impactful series of performances for Delhi Capitals.

On the field Ishant is known for his aggression and a fast-bowling style that has led some observers to describe him among India's quickest seamers. Over a long international career he has experienced both highs and lows; he has spoken openly about a difficult match in Mohali in 2013 that remains a low point for him and how teammates helped him recover his confidence.

Public profile

Ishant is widely recognized by the nicknames "Lambu" and "Sonu." He wears the number 29 jersey for India and has also been assigned the number 1 jersey at Sunrisers Hyderabad. Physical attributes often noted alongside his playing style include brown eyes, black hair, and an approximate playing weight of 84 kg (185 lbs).

Away from the game he enjoys movies, driving and motorbiking, and playing other sports such as volleyball and football. He has cited Sachin Tendulkar and Glenn McGrath among his favorite cricketers and named Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt as actresses he likes. Grilled meat and home-cooked food by his mother are listed among his food preferences.

Personal life

Ishant is married to Pratima Singh, a basketball player. The couple were married on 9 December 2016. He follows a non-vegetarian diet and identifies with Hinduism.

He has been fined by the IPL for a breach of the Code of Conduct; in that instance the league announced a deduction from his match fees and assigned a demerit point.
