From an early age Perišić showed dedication to football: he began playing at six and travelled long distances as a child to attend training. He joined the Hajduk Split youth setup at around ten years old.

He spent time on loan in Belgium with KSV Roeselare, making his club debut for them on 17 January 2009 against KV Kortrijk. His performances in Belgium with Club Brugge raised his profile and led to a move to Borussia Dortmund, who signed him on a long-term deal. He made his Dortmund debut on 5 August 2011 against Hamburger SV and was part of the squad that won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in the 2011–2012 season.

In January 2013 Perišić transferred to VfL Wolfsburg, scoring in a friendly shortly after his arrival. During his time in Germany he added a DFB-Pokal victory in 2014–2015 and the DFL-Supercup in 2015 to his list of club honours. On 30 August 2015 he signed a five-year contract with Inter Milan and made his debut for the club within days.

Internationally, Perišić made his debut for Croatia on 26 March 2011 against Georgia. He was selected for the national squads at major tournaments including UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
