Early life and background

Ivanka Das was born Arandeep Das on 18 December 1986 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Raised in a Bengali family, she attended South Point School in Kolkata and later studied at Gobardanga Hindu College. Her father worked as a musician and her mother held a management position at The Oberoi in Colaba; both parents died when she was young. Ivanka grew up speaking Bengali and later became fluent in Hindi and English as well.

While growing up she experienced and later described gender incongruence that became clearer to her in her early twenties. Ivanka began using the name Ivanka Das after undergoing gender confirmation procedures in Delhi. Her background also includes a period of financial struggle during which she worked a variety of jobs to support herself.

Career

Ivanka’s professional life began in dance. She competed in numerous local dance contests in Kolkata, worked as a choreographer and eventually became a fashion creative director for events and individuals. She has said she became one of the youngest choreographers in Kolkata and gained visibility by sharing dance videos on social platforms.

Modeling followed from an invitation to help on a friend’s photoshoot. Around the time she began losing hair to alopecia, a photographer suggested she try a shaved head; Ivanka embraced the bald look and it became a defining aspect of her public image. She has described herself as the first bald trans model and later as a transwoman with multiple creative skills entering the Hindi film world.

Ivanka also performed as a drag artist at venues such as Kitty Su, a club associated with The LaLiT. An early setback at that venue was reversed after she contacted the owner and was later hired to perform.

On screen, Ivanka’s television debut came as a contestant on Dance Deewane (Season 2) in 2019. That same year she appeared in the web series Yeh Hai #Mandi. She went on to work in streaming shows including Netflix’s Bombay Begums and ZEE5’s Sunflower. On television she portrayed Shanmukhi in the Colors TV serial Chand Jalne Laga (2023).

Her film credits include a role in Maja Ma (2022) as a trans activist and a busy 2023 that saw her appear in Ghoomer (as Rasika) and in the crime drama Haddi (as Surri). Ivanka has spoken about the dynamics of working on film sets and about her experiences as a transgender artist among cast and crew.

Public profile

Ivanka has been featured on prominent magazine covers, including Vogue India in 2019 and Harper’s Bazaar in 2023. She is known for a bold, distinctive look and for being outspoken about her identity and career. Ivanka is active on social media, where she posts about her work, cooking, and life experiences. She has said cooking is a meditative practice for her and has discussed personal challenges she faced earlier in life.

Personal life

Ivanka identifies as a transwoman. Before transitioning she married a woman in 2010 while still being identified as a man; the marriage ended after about a year and the two remained friends. She has described past relationships from before her transition, including a three-year relationship with a man in Delhi that helped clarify her gender identity. Ivanka has spoken openly about experiencing body dysphoria and about using spiritual community resources, including visits to ISKCON, during difficult periods.

She has mentioned occasional alcohol use and smoking, the latter of which she has described as something she adopted earlier to conform to a masculine image. Ivanka has several tattoos and follows a non-vegetarian diet.

Ivanka has also engaged in social work, collaborating with non-governmental organizations such as the Society for Human Alliance Need.
