Jaani (Punjabi Songwriter): Biography

Rajiv Kumar, known professionally as Jaani, is an Indian lyricist and composer from Giddarbaha, Punjab. Born in 1989, he rose from local songwriting to pen

Early life and background

Rajiv Kumar, who works under the stage name Jaani, was born on 25 May 1989 in Giddarbaha, a village near Bathinda in Punjab, India. He completed his school education at SSD Memorial School in Giddarbaha and later graduated from Rayat Bahra University in Mohali. After finishing his degree he also completed a diploma course in hotel management.

As a young student he often preferred pursuits outside the classroom; he remembers running away from school once to watch a film and accepting the punishment that followed without regret. During his college years he began writing poetry, initially as a way to impress peers. Those early efforts revealed a talent for words that would later shape his career.

Career

Jaani’s entry into professional songwriting grew from local work to mainstream success. One of his earliest credited professional songs is "Soch," released in 2012. Prior to that he wrote a devotional track titled "Sant Sipahi" that received local attention. A turning point came when he collaborated with Punjabi singer Hardy Sandhu and music producer B Praak. A story from his early career describes Jaani refining the lyrics of a Hardy Sandhu track; the interaction helped open doors and led to further collaborations.

The partnership with B Praak and director Arvindr Khaira proved particularly productive. Together they worked on a string of tracks that helped establish all of them in the Punjabi music industry. Following the success of "Soch," the team produced several widely heard songs. Over subsequent years Jaani wrote lyrics for numerous hits and worked with many of Punjab’s prominent singers. In 2015 he and B Praak released an album that featured standouts such as "Tara" performed by Ammy Virk, "Ek Saal" by Jassi Gill, and "Na Ji Na" by Hardy Sandhu.

Jaani’s writing often returned to themes of love and heartbreak, drawing on personal experience as well as observations of others. He has said that some lines come from his own life and some are inspired by the lives of people around him. Several of his songs became big hits across Punjabi and Hindi markets, and his name on a track came to be seen by many fans as a mark of a potential hit.

Popular work and collaborations

Across his career Jaani has penned numerous popular songs. Among the tracks associated with him are "Soch," "Naah," "Kya Baat Ay," "Pachtaoge," "Filhall," "Titliaan," "Baarish Ki Jaaye," and "Filhaal2 Mohabbat." He has written for both Punjabi releases and for songs that appeared in Indian films. His collaborations with B Praak, in particular, expanded after B Praak began singing as well as composing around 2017, forming a creative pairing that further amplified Jaani’s profile.
