Jackie Shroff was born Jai Kishan Kakubhai on 1 February 1957 in Bombay (now Mumbai). He grew up in a Gujarati-speaking family in the Teen Batti area of Malabar Hill. Financial hardship during his childhood interrupted his formal education after the 11th standard and led him to take work at a travel agency in Mumbai. His family story includes a mix of Gujarati and maternal Turkish/Kazakh roots and a difficult period after his father lost money in the stock market, which forced the family into a small chawl flat where Jackie spent much of his early life.

A formative and tragic episode in his childhood was the drowning of his elder brother Hemant at a young age. That loss left a lasting impression and contributed to Jackie’s sense of responsibility toward his local community.
