Jagadish Shettar Biography
Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician and lawyer from Karnataka who has served in multiple high-profile roles including Chief Minister, Speaker
Early life and backgroundJagadish Shivappa Shettar was born on 17 December 1955 in Kerur, Bagalkot district, Karnataka. Raised in a politically active family, his father Shivappa Shivamurthappa Shettar served multiple terms on the Hubli-Dharwad City Corporation and was the first Jan Sangh mayor in southern India. Jagadish attended local schools in Hubballi and completed higher education in commerce and law, earning a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws. His upbringing in Badami and Hubballi shaped his early interest in public life and public service.
Career
Shettar entered active politics through student and volunteer organisations and became involved with the BJP from the 1980s. He rose steadily through party ranks, holding leadership posts at the district and state levels before first winning election to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Hubli Rural constituency in 1994. Over the next decades he was repeatedly elected from Hubli Rural and later from Hubli-Dharwad Central, maintaining an unbroken winning streak in assembly contests between 1994 and 2018.
From the late 1990s he assumed larger responsibilities within the state BJP, serving as state secretary and later as party president for Karnataka. He served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly in 1999 and again between 2013 and 2018. In 2006 he was given charge of the state revenue portfolio for about a year, and in 2008 he became Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He moved between the Speaker’s chair and ministerial office, taking on the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj portfolio in 2009.
In July 2012 Shettar was appointed Chief Minister of Karnataka, a role he held until May 2013. He remained a central figure in state politics thereafter, including a spell as the state minister for Large and Medium Industries from August 2019 to July 2021. After nearly three decades with the BJP, he resigned from the party and as MLA in April 2023 and joined the Indian National Congress a day later. He later rejoined the BJP on 25 January 2024 and won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Belgaum seat.
Public profile
Shettar’s family connections and long tenure in Karnataka politics have kept him prominent in public life. His father’s civic record and his uncle Sadashiva Shettar’s earlier electoral success in the Jan Sangh era are part of the family’s political legacy. Two of his sons, Prashant and Sankalp Shettar, feature in the public record through their marriages into other political families, and his brother Pradeep Shettar has also served in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Known for a preference for reading in his leisure time, Shettar has been active in community initiatives as well. He founded the SS Shettar Foundation in Hubballi in memory of his father and helped organise the Hubballi Ugadi Utsav in 2023 through the foundation and local benefactors.
Latest updates
In early 2023, after the state BJP did not field him for the Karnataka assembly election, Shettar left the party and publicly criticised the decision. He joined the Indian National Congress in April 2023 and contested the Hubli-Dharwad Central seat on a Congress ticket. Less than a year later he returned to the BJP on 25 January 2024 and subsequently contested and won the Belgaum Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections.
