Jagdambika Pal was born on 21 October 1950 in the village of Rameshwerpuri in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh. He completed higher education that includes a BA, MA and an LLB from institutions such as Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University (Faizabad), Lucknow University and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University. Raised in a family from Basti, Pal is identified with the Hindu faith and belongs to the Kshatriya Rajput community.

Career

Pal trained and practiced as an advocate before embarking on a long career in politics. His entry into legislative politics began with two terms in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council from 1982 to 1993. He was a prominent presence in state government through the late 1980s and 1990s, serving as Minister of State in the Uttar Pradesh government between 1988 and 1999 and holding a cabinet minister post in 2002.

From 1993 until 2007 Pal represented constituencies as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for three successive terms. During the 1990s he was involved in regional political realignments; after leaving the Indian National Congress at one stage he was part of a group that supported the Kalyan Singh government and served as transport minister in the Uttar Pradesh administration.

At the national level Pal was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009. Over subsequent terms he held a sequence of committee assignments: member of the Standing Committee on Energy, member of the Committee on Petitions and the Committee on Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme, and later chairman of the Committee on Public Undertakings (2011–2014). He resigned from the 15th Lok Sabha in March 2014 and was re-elected to the 16th Lok Sabha that May.

While a Member of Parliament he continued an active committee role: Business Advisory Committee, Committee on Privileges, Joint Committee on Security in Parliament House Complex, and committees addressing matters such as chemicals and fertilizers, home affairs, external affairs, and the enforcement of debt recovery laws. In 2019 he was re-elected to the 17th Lok Sabha and subsequently served as chairperson of the Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs. In the 2024 general election he retained his electoral standing by winning the Domariyaganj Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.
