Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy was born on 21 April 1984 in Jalalabad, Punjab. Raised in the same town, he comes from a family with an active public profile; his father, Surinder Singh Kamboj, has stood for the Jalalabad seat in the past. Jagdeep completed a BA LLB and trained as an advocate after finishing his legal studies at Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner. Alongside his legal work he has also been involved in farming.

Kamboj began his political activity through the Indian Youth Congress, rising through organizational ranks to hold a number of youth leadership posts. He served as general secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress, was in charge of Youth Congress units in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana, and later became general secretary of the All-India Youth Congress. He also served as president of the Truck Union in Jalalabad.

He sought a Congress ticket for the Jalalabad Assembly seat at different points but did not always receive party endorsement. In 2019 he resigned from his post as national secretary of the Indian Youth Congress after the party allotted the Jalalabad by-election ticket to another candidate. When the party dismissed him for contesting the 2019 by-election as an independent, Kamboj stood as an independent candidate with the election symbol of a man driving a tractor and used the slogan “Neta Nahi Beta.” He finished that by-election with a modest vote share.

In February 2020 Kamboj joined the Aam Aadmi Party. Within AAP he rose to lead the party’s BC wing in Punjab. The party named him its candidate for the Jalalabad constituency in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. On 10 March 2022 he won the seat, defeating the three-time incumbent Sukhbir Singh Badal by a substantial margin, and became a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly as AAP formed the state government under Bhagwant Mann.
