Jagdish Devda was born on 1 July 1957 in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh. He completed his schooling at Government Middle School, Rampura, Neemuch, and went on to study at Government College, Rampura (affiliated with Vikram University, Ujjain), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1977 and a Master of Arts in Economics in 1979. He later obtained an LLB from Shri Jawaharlal Nehru Law College, Ujjain, in 1985.

Devda’s roots are in Neemuch, and he belongs to a Scheduled Caste community. Before embarking on full-time politics he combined academic and professional interests: in 1986 he worked as an English professor at Vikram University in Ujjain and also trained as a lawyer.

Career
Jagdish Devda began his political activity during his college years, serving as president of his college students’ union in 1979. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and rose through its ranks, holding a range of party responsibilities over the decades.

At the state level, Devda has a long legislative record. He represented the Suwasara constituency in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1990, 1993 and 2003. After contests that included both wins and a defeat in 1998, he later established a sustained presence in the Malhargarh constituency, winning that seat in 2008, 2013, 2018 and again in 2023. He has served eight consecutive terms as the legislator for Malhargarh, and in the fourth Shivraj Singh Chouhan ministry he held portfolios including Commercial Taxes, Planning, Economics and Statistics.

In the 15th Madhya Pradesh Assembly he briefly took on the role of Pro-tem Speaker before stepping down to accept a ministerial position. On 11 December 2023 he was elevated to the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh as part of the BJP-led state government.

Electoral highlights include victories over Indian National Congress opponents across multiple elections: notable margins include the 2003 comeback win in Suwasara and large margins in Malhargarh, most recently in 2023 when he defeated an independent candidate by a margin of 59,024 votes.
