Jagrati Awasthi (UPSC Topper 2020) Biography

Early life and background

Jagrati Awasthi was born in 1997 and raised in Bhopal, with family roots in the Bundelkhand region. She completed her schooling at Maharishi Vidya Mandir in Bhopal and went on to study electrical engineering at the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal. Her parents are SC Awasthi, a homeopath, and Madhulata Awasthi, who worked as a school teacher. She has a younger brother, Suyash Awasthi, who pursued medical studies.

During her school years Jagrati was active in extracurriculars such as declamation and debate, earning several prizes. She developed interests outside academics too, including public speaking and listening to Bundelkhandi folk music.

Career

After completing her engineering degree Jagrati appeared for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in 2016 and achieved a strong all-India performance. She joined Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as a technical officer and worked there for nearly two years. Despite having a stable engineering position, she maintained her ambition to join the civil services and began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Jagrati first attempted the UPSC examination in 2019 while employed, but did not clear it that year. She then decided to leave her job and devote herself full time to UPSC preparation. She moved to Delhi for in-person coaching, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced her back to Bundelkhand where she continued studying using online resources.

In her second attempt, the 2020 UPSC Civil Services Examination, Jagrati secured All India Rank 2 and emerged as the top-ranked female candidate. She scored a total of 1,052 marks, with 859 in the written exam and 193 in the personality test, amounting to 51.95 percent. She had taken sociology as her optional subject and was allotted the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Jagrati has expressed a dedication to working on rural development with particular focus on programs for children and women's welfare.

Preparation approach

Jagrati has described a disciplined, gradually intensifying study schedule during the pandemic. She started with eight to ten hours of daily study, later extending to ten to twelve hours, and in the two months before the exam pushed her routine to twelve to fourteen hours per day. She also maintained attention to physical fitness and mental well-being while preparing at home.

Public profile

Following the announcement of the 2020 UPSC results on 24 September 2021, Jagrati received widespread congratulations and was interviewed by multiple media outlets. In interviews she has credited her family—particularly her parents and brother—for their sacrifice and support during her long preparation journey. Her mother left her teaching job to support the family's educational efforts, and the household made lifestyle adjustments to help both children prepare for competitive exams.

Personal notes

Jagrati is unmarried. Her hobbies include public speaking and listening to regional folk songs. She stands approximately 162 cm (5'4") tall and has black hair and black eyes. She has stated that her early promise in 2016 included a written commitment to her mother about performing well in competitive exams, reflecting a long-standing focus on academic goals.

Latest updates

After the 2020 examination cycle Jagrati transitioned into the civil services as an IAS selectee. Media coverage and interviews following the results highlighted her study regimen, her shift from engineering to public service, and her stated aspirations to serve rural communities and improve welfare for children and women.
