Early life and background

Jai Ram Thakur was born on 6 January 1965 in Tandi village, Thunag, in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. He grew up in a family that relied on farming, and his early years included financial hardship. Thakur attended a government primary school in Tandi and continued middle education at a government school in Thunag. He went on to study at Vallabh Government College in Mandi and later at Panjab University, Chandigarh, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in English Literature.

Thakur’s family includes his parents, the late Jethu Ram Thakur and Briku Devi, three brothers and two sisters. He married Sadhna Thakur on 21 June 1995; the couple have two daughters, Chandrika and Priyanka. Hometown and family roots have remained central to his public image.

Career

Thakur’s political work began in student politics. He joined the student organization ABVP and took on leadership roles there in the late 1980s and early 1990s, serving as joint secretary and later as organizing secretary in Jammu and Kashmir. He transitioned into BJP youth and state roles throughout the 1990s, becoming state secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Himachal Pradesh and later serving as vice president of the state BJP.

He first won election to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1998 from the Chachiot (Seraj) constituency. Thakur successfully retained his seat through successive elections in 2003, 2007, 2012 and 2017. Between 2009 and 2012 he served as Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, a period during which he focused on rural development, education and public welfare programs.

On 27 December 2017, after the BJP won state elections, Jai Ram Thakur was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. He was the first chief minister from Mandi district and led the state government through a range of priorities that included rural development, tourism, health, education and infrastructure. His tenure also coincided with major national and regional events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and farmer protests. In recognition of rural development work, in 2017 he received awards from the Ministry of Rural Development for performance under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

He then became Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
