Early life and background

Jaiveer Shergill was born on 28 June 1983 in Jalandhar, Punjab. Raised in a family with a legal background—his father, Rajeshwar Singh Shergill, is a lawyer—he attended schools in Jalandhar, including St. Joseph's Boys School and APJ School. He completed his law degree in 2006 from the National University of Juridical Sciences in West Bengal and went on to earn an LLM from UC Berkeley School of Law in 2009.

Career

After finishing his undergraduate legal studies in 2006, Shergill began practicing in Delhi and joined Economic Laws Practice as a law associate, focusing on tax and commercial matters. In 2008 he moved to the chambers of senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi. He later practised at the Supreme Court of India and took part in several high-profile matters, including work on the Vodafone tax litigation that involved large claims by the Income Tax department.

Between 2008 and 2009 Shergill represented Young India at the International Bar Association. He has represented clients in disputes with international dimensions and has worked on contentious religious and commercial matters, including a religious dispute in Karnataka in 2011 and litigation for Vistara in 2022 concerning foreign carriers in India.

Political work and party roles

Shergill became active in the Indian National Congress and held several party roles: National Media Panelist, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson, and Co-Chairman of the Congress Legal Cell in Punjab. In 2013 he helped launch a 24x7 legal helpline for Congress workers seeking assistance with legal matters. During his time with the party he spoke publicly on issues such as education and school conditions in Punjab, drug abuse, women's safety, economic policy and parliamentary functioning.

In August 2022 Shergill resigned from the Indian National Congress. In a public statement and a letter to the party leadership he said that internal decision-making no longer matched his expectations and he criticised what he described as the influence of sycophancy within the party.
