Early life and background

Jalaj Ashwin Dani was born on 20 October 1969 in Mumbai and grew up in a family with deep roots in India’s paint industry. He is the son of the late Ashwin Dani and Ina Dani and belongs to the Dani family originally from Kapadvanj, Gujarat. His formative education included studies in chemical engineering, and he attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He later completed an Advanced Management Program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, Paris.

Career

Jalaj Dani began his professional journey as a director on the board of Asian Paints, the company co-founded by his grandfather and others. Over nearly two decades he held a succession of operational and leadership roles across international operations, supply chain, chemicals, human resources and corporate quality and safety functions. In the late 1990s and 2000s he moved from board-level responsibilities into executive roles, including Vice President, International and later International President, overseeing a period of acquisitions and expansion for the company’s overseas businesses.

During his tenure he led Asian Paints’ international strategy and was involved in the acquisition and management of businesses such as Berger International, where he served as chairman. He was promoted to senior group roles including President of HR, International & Chemicals, and later President of HR, Supply Chain & Chemicals. In 2017 he stepped down from executive leadership and became a co-promoter of Asian Paints. Shareholding records as of 30 September 2022 show he held fully paid-up equity shares in the company.

After leaving an executive role at Asian Paints, Jalaj expanded his focus to entrepreneurship, governance and the technology and sports ecosystems. He joined Addverb Technologies’ board in February 2018 and was appointed Chairman of Addverb Technologies in September 2020. He also serves as a chairman-invitee and board member of Fourth Frontier Technologies, a company developing a wearable continuous ECG monitoring device.

Jalaj has been active across industry bodies and skills initiatives. He chaired the Paints and Coatings Sector Skill Council from its start until 2017 and served as President of The Indian Paint Association between 2015 and 2017. He has participated in the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Young Presidents’ Organization and other business councils. His roles in the skills and sports domains include President of the Sports, Physical Education, Fitness and Leisure Skills Council and President of the Sportscom Industry Confederation. He has also held numerous governance and advisory positions with educational and development institutions, including the governing body of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University and board roles with Piramal Foundation and related entities.
