Early life and background

James Lee Pattinson was born on 3 May 1990 in Melbourne, Victoria. Raised in the Melbourne suburb of Grimsby, he grew up in a working-class family; his father worked for many years as a roof tiler. Cricket ran in the family: his older brother Darren Pattinson also played at international level, representing England in a Test match in 2008.

Pattinson developed as a fast bowler from a young age and represented Australia at the under-19 level, appearing in the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His physical presence — listed at 1.86 m (6'1") with black hair and black eyes — suited the role of a right-arm fast-medium bowler.

Career

Pattinson made his breakthrough in domestic cricket with Victoria. In 2010 he recorded a standout performance for the state side, taking six wickets for 48 runs — a mark that set a new benchmark for Victoria and attracted the attention of national selectors.

His consistent domestic form led to international opportunities in 2011. Pattinson earned caps across formats that year, making his One-Day International debut on 13 April 2011 and featuring in Twenty20 and Test squads during the same period. He took five wickets on his Test debut.

Across domestic and franchise cricket, Pattinson has appeared for several teams. His state and domestic affiliations include Victoria and Dandenong Cricket Club, and he has played in the Big Bash League for Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat. In the Indian Premier League system he has been associated with Kolkata Knight Riders and later joined Mumbai Indians as a replacement in 2020.

Pattinson's international career has been affected by injuries at various times, resulting in intermittent spells away from the field. Despite setbacks, he has produced a number of notable bowling performances when fit and available, demonstrating the ability to swing and seam the ball at pace.

Public profile

Pattinson is known by nicknames such as Jimmy and Patto. He bats left-handed and wears shirt number 19 when representing Australia. He holds dual citizenship for Australia and the United Kingdom.

Off the field he pursues interests including fishing and racing. He keeps a personal diary in which he uses different pen colours to organise training schedules, goals and reflections. Pattinson has several tattoos on his left arm.

Personal life

Pattinson married Kayla Dickson on 2 November 2016. The couple have a daughter, Lilah Ruby Pattinson, who was born prematurely in October 2018. His parents are John and Sue Pattinson.

Controversies and discipline

His career has included disciplinary episodes referenced in public reporting. In 2013 he was among players suspended by team management during a Test series for breaches of conduct related to team responsibilities. In 2019 he received a one-match ban from the ICC for using a homophobic slur during a match; that action was recorded in official disciplinary proceedings.

Latest updates

Pattinson remained active in domestic and franchise cricket circles and was signed by Mumbai Indians as a replacement player for the 2020 IPL season. Injuries have continued to shape the tempo of his career, but he has returned from setbacks to contribute at state and franchise level when available.

Career outlook

Renowned for his ability to produce match-changing bowling spells, Pattinson's profile is defined by moments of high performance interrupted by fitness challenges. When fully fit, he has been viewed by selectors and teammates as a potent fast-bowling option for both domestic sides and the national team.
