Early life and background

Jamshed Jiji Irani was born on 2 June 1936 in Nagpur District in what was then the Central Provinces & Berar of British India. He came from a Parsi family; his parents were Jiji Dhunjibhoy Irani and Khorshed (Guzder) Irani. He grew up in a community that practiced Zoroastrianism.

Irani completed a rigorous academic course in the sciences. His formal education includes a B.Sc and M.Sc in geology, followed by advanced study in metallurgy. He earned a master’s degree and went on to obtain a PhD in metallurgy. His university record lists Science College Nagpur and Nagpur University, with further study at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

Career

After finishing his studies in the United Kingdom in 1963, Irani began his professional career with the British Iron and Steel Research Association (BISRA). He worked there as a senior scientific officer and rose to lead its Physical Metallurgy Division before leaving in 1968.

On returning to India in 1968 he joined Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), the organisation that later became known as Tata Steel Limited. He initially served as an assistant to the director in charge of research and development, and over the following decades advanced through the company’s technical and managerial ranks.

Irani became General Superintendent in 1978 and was promoted to General Manager a year later. He joined TISCO’s board in 1981 and served as president of the company in 1985. Between 1988 and 1992 he was a Joint Managing Director, and in 1992 he was elevated to Managing Director, a position he held until his retirement in 2001.

His leadership extended beyond Tata Steel. In 1993 he joined the board of Tata Motors and was named a director of Tata Sons Private Limited. That year and later he also took on roles representing industry: the Confederation of Indian Industry appointed him national president in 2001. In 1996 he was recognised internationally when the Royal Academy of Engineering named him an International Fellow.

Irani maintained an active role in governance and reform efforts. In 2003 he founded the Tata Education Excellence Program, and in 2004 the Government of India appointed him chairman of its Expert Committee on Company Law. He remained involved with Tata Group institutions until 2011, when he retired from all Tata boards at age 75 and subsequently accepted a directorship at the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow.

Public profile

Over a long career in Indian industry and metallurgy, Irani received a number of honours. The United Kingdom recognised him with the title of Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1997. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 2007, and he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian government in 2008. Within India’s steel and manufacturing sectors he was widely known by the sobriquet “Steel man of India.”

Irani combined professional work with charitable and community activities. Beginning in 1987 he and his sister, Diana Hormusjee, organised an annual cricket tournament — the Jiji Irani Challenge Cup — held by the Zoroastrian Club of Secunderabad in memory of their father. He was also known to enjoy sports such as cricket and football.

Jamshed Irani married Daisy Irani on 17 September 1971. They had three children: a son, Zubin J. Irani, who pursued engineering and business, and two daughters, Niloufer J. Irani, who worked in human resources, and Tanaaz J. Irani. His sister was Diana Hormusjee.

Family accounts described personal hobbies that accompanied travel: he collected items such as key chains, stamps and other souvenirs from family vacations and maintained a notable Readers’ Digest collection and family photographs.
