Early life and background

Jasbir Singh Bains, known professionally as Jasbir Jassi, was born on 7 February 1970 in Dalia Mirjanpur in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India. Raised in a Sikh household, he grew up playing the harmonium and developed an early interest in music. His father is Ajit Singh and his mother is Prakash Kaur; he also has two elder sisters.

Jassi initially followed his father's wish that he study engineering, but he left that course before completion because his passion for music proved stronger. He later enrolled in a postgraduate program in classical vocal music at Apeejay College of Fine Art in Jalandhar but did not finish that study either. Instead, he trained under teachers V.S. Jolly and the Sufi singer Puran Shah Koti, building the classical foundation that would inform his singing career.

Career

Jasbir Jassi began recording as a singer in the early 1990s. His debut album, Channa Ve Teri Channani, arrived in 1993. Though active before then, Jassi reached widespread recognition in 1998 when a song inspired by a real‑life romance became a major hit and established him as a prominent voice in Punjabi pop and folk music.

Over the years Jassi has worked as a vocalist and lyricist and has contributed songs to several Bollywood films, including tracks for Dobara (2004), Patiala House (2011) and Kesari (2019). Beyond studio albums, he made small on‑screen appearances in films such as Dil Vil Pyar Vyar (2002) and Heer Ranjha: A True Love Story (2009). He made his feature film acting debut in Khushiyaan (2011), portraying the character Raj Verma.

In 2012 Jassi was part of Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2, bringing his voice to a televised collaborative music platform. That same year he performed at the 65th Cannes Film Festival in France, representing his music on an international stage.

Jassi has also served as a judge on a variety of television reality shows. His credits include Voice Of Punjab Chota Champ and Voice of Punjab 2 on PTC Punjabi, Ticket to Bollywood on NDTV Prime and Awaaz Punjab di on MH1.

As a first‑generation musician from his family, Jassi became known for blending Punjabi folk sensibilities with contemporary production.
