Jasia Akhtar was born on 27 May 1988 in Braripora, Shopian, in Jammu and Kashmir. She grew up in a Kashmiri family as the eldest of five children and spent her early years playing multiple sports. Her father, Gul Mohammad Wani, worked as a farmer, and her mother worked at home. From childhood she showed an appetite for sport: she practised with cousins, learned from local coaches, and competed in school-level athletics before focusing on cricket.

Jasia pursued higher education at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, where she completed a Master of Arts degree. During her late teens she represented her school and region at national school games in a range of sports, including cricket, softball and kabaddi. She also trained under coaches such as Murtuza Bashir and later Khalid Hamid.

Jasia’s pathway to professional cricket involved repeated personal sacrifices and long journeys for practice and matches. In September 2017 she earned selection to an India women’s national team camp, becoming the first woman cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to be called into a national camp.
