Jaspal Rana was born on 28 June 1976 in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. He grew up in a family with a strong connection to shooting; his father, Narayan Singh Rana, served as his first coach and introduced him to both pistol and rifle training when Jaspal was a child. Rana attended Kendriya Vidyalaya School and made an early impact on the national shooting scene, making his senior national debut at the 31st National Shooting Championship in Ahmedabad in 1988 when he was 12.

Career

Rana established himself rapidly as one of India’s leading pistol shooters. He made his international debut in 1994 in the junior division at the 46th World Shooting Championships in Milan, where he recorded an outstanding performance in the 25 m pistol event and set a junior world record. That year also brought him gold at the Asian Games in Hiroshima in the 25 m center fire pistol event, and he was honoured with the Arjuna Award for his achievements.

Across the 1990s and 2000s Rana accumulated a long list of international medals.
