Early life and background

Jaswant Singh Gill was born on 22 November 1939 in Sathiala, Amritsar, Punjab. He grew up in a Sikh family as the fourth of five children. His father, Daswandha Singh Gill, worked as a senior clerk in the postal department, and his mother was Sardarni Preetam Kaur Gill. Gill received his early schooling locally, attending an Urdu school for his first years before moving on to Khalsa College Public School in Amritsar.

He completed a BSc (Non-Medical) from Khalsa College in 1959 and went on to study mining engineering at the Indian School of Mines (now part of IIT) in Dhanbad, graduating in the mid-1960s. Later in life he also enrolled for an LLB at Khalsa College.

Career

Gill began his professional life in the coal industry after graduating, initially joining Karam Chand Thapar & Bros (Coal Sales) Ltd. In 1972 he took a position with Coal India Limited. Over the years he rose through technical and managerial ranks to become Chief General Manager, ED (Safety & Rescue) for Coal India in Raniganj, West Bengal.

His name is most closely associated with a dramatic rescue effort in November 1989, when a breach in a mine seam flooded shafts and left 65 miners trapped. Gill designed and supervised construction of a steel rescue capsule and the drilling of a larger bore through which the capsule could descend. On the night of 16 November 1989 he entered the capsule himself and, over several hours, helped evacuate the trapped miners one by one. The entire operation lasted roughly six hours and is remembered as the first successful coal-mine rescue of its kind in India.

Following the Raniganj operation, Gill took part in other rescue efforts, including work on a rescue in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. He retired from Coal India in 1998 and returned to his hometown in Punjab.

Public profile

Gill’s actions in 1989 brought him national recognition and numerous honours. Among the awards and recognitions recorded during his life were the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak (1991), inclusion in the Limca Book of Records for the mine rescue, a World Book of Record entry in 2018, and multiple lifetime achievement and humanitarian awards from educational and civic bodies. He received an honorary doctorate (PhD) from Universal Achievers University in 2019. He was also presented with awards for excellence in safety from industry organizations and received civic honours recognizing his service to miners and communities.

Beyond formal awards, Gill remained active in social and disaster-preparedness work after retirement. He served on Amritsar’s Disaster Management Committee and was associated with Rotary International, holding a leadership role within the organisation in 2018. In early 2019 he appeared as a guest speaker on a Punjabi episode of the talk platform Josh Talks.

Family and personal life

Gill married Nirdosh Kaur on 19 October 1969. The couple had four children: two sons and two daughters. His elder son, Dr Sarpreet Singh Gill, is a cardiologist based in the United States; his other son, Randip Singh Gill, is an entrepreneur and real estate professional in Vancouver, Canada. His daughters are Poonam Gill and Hina Gill. Siblings and extended family include a mix of professionals who served in education, medicine and banking.

Later years and legacy

Jaswant Singh Gill passed away at his home in Amritsar on 26 November 2019 following a cardiac arrest at the age of 80. His last rites were performed at Gurudwara Chhevin Patshahi in Amritsar. Posthumous recognitions and memorials have been established in his memory: an industrial safety excellence award named after him with a cash prize, a chowk on Majitha Road in Amritsar bearing his name, a memorial gate and a garden in the Eastern Coalfields Limited region, and a commemorative bulletin.

In April 2022 his portrait was unveiled at the Sikh Museum within the Golden Temple complex, attended by family members. His rescue work continues to be commemorated locally; 16 November is observed in connection with the Raniganj rescue. The Raniganj operation also inspired interest from the film industry, with a Hindi feature on the mission later produced in which an actor portrays Gill.
