Javagal Srinath Biography
Javagal Romelu Srinath, known as the Mysore Express, is a former Indian fast bowler who represented India through the 1990s and early 2000s. A tall right‑p
Early life and backgroundJavagal Romelu Srinath was born on 31 August 1969 in the Hassan district of Karnataka and grew up in Mysore. He attended Marimallappa High School in Mysore and went on to study engineering at Malnad College of Engineering in Hassan and Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering in Mysore, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Instrumentation Technology. Srinath began playing cricket at age 12 and captained his school side for the first time while in tenth standard.
Career
Srinath emerged as one of India’s leading fast bowlers during the 1990s. A right‑arm pace bowler who batted right‑handed, he made his One Day International debut on 18 October 1991 against Pakistan in Sharjah and his Test debut on 29 October 1991 against Australia in Brisbane. He wore jersey number 7 for India and continued to play international cricket until announcing his retirement after the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa. His final ODI appearance came on 23 March 2003 against Australia in Johannesburg and his last Test was on 30 October 2002 against the West Indies in Kolkata.
Standing about 1.91 m (6'3"), Srinath combined pace—regularly exceeding 150 km/h during his career—with accuracy and the ability to reverse‑swing the ball. He is widely recognised as one of India’s premier fast bowlers: he was the first Indian pacer to feature in four World Cups, finished as India’s highest wicket‑taker among fast bowlers in ODIs, and reached the milestone of 300 ODI wickets behind only a few Indian bowlers at the time. He holds several notable statistical distinctions, including fast bowling appearances and records in World Cups, and is credited with the fastest ball recorded by an Indian bowler at 157 km/h.
Srinath enjoyed particular success against South Africa, where he amassed 64 Test wickets in 13 matches at a strong average. The period from 1996 to 2001 is often described as the golden phase of his Test career, when he took 170 wickets in 39 Tests. He produced one of his best spells at Motera in 1996–97, returning figures of 6 for 21 while defending a modest total.
Beyond international cricket, Srinath represented several domestic and county teams, including Karnataka, Durham, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Rest of India, South Zone, and various representative XIs. Early in his domestic career he recorded a hat‑trick in a Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad in 1989.
Srinath’s batting was useful lower down the order; he made four Test fifties and one ODI fifty, with a highest score of 76. He shared 100‑run partnerships with only two teammates in Test cricket: Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.
After retirement
Following his playing career, Srinath moved into television commentary and joined the ICC match referee panel in 2006. He has also appeared in commercial work alongside former teammates.
Public profile
Srinath acquired nicknames such as the Mysore Express and Karnataka Express during his playing days. He won national recognition early in his career, receiving the Indian Cricketer of the Year award in 1992 and the Arjuna Award in 1996. Known for a largely soft‑spoken demeanour on the field, he has spoken admiringly of peers such as Wasim Akram and listed several top international batsmen among the most challenging he faced.
Personal life
Srinath comes from a family that includes his father JK Chandrashekar and mother Bhagyalakshmi, and siblings including a brother, Javagal Srinivas, and sisters Srilakshmi and Srilatha. He married first in 1999 and later married Madhavi Patravali in 2008; Madhavi Patravali is listed as his current spouse. Raised vegetarian, he later adopted a non‑vegetarian diet on the advice of a coach. His hometown is recorded as Mysore, Karnataka, and his nationality is Indian.
