Early life and background

Javed Khan Amrohi was born on 24 March 1949 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He completed his formal training at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he graduated before beginning a long career in film, television and theatre. He lived and worked in Mumbai for most of his life.

Career

After finishing his studies at FTII, Javed Khan began taking supporting roles in films. His on-screen debut came in the 1973 feature Jalte Badan, in which he played a college student. Over the next several decades he built a steady career as a character actor, appearing in around 150 Hindi films.

He became familiar to audiences through memorable turns in popular films such as Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), and Chak De! India (2007). Other notable film appearances include Naram Garam (1981), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), Ek Ladka Ek Ladki (1992), Phir Hera Pheri (2006) and Dhoom Dadakka (2008). His last film credit was Sadak 2 (2020), in which he appeared as Pakya.

Television brought him a different kind of recognition. He featured in the highly popular Doordarshan serial Nukkad (1986) as Karim Hajaam, the neighbourhood barber, a role that made him widely known to TV viewers. He also appeared in shows including Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), where he played the servant Jhumroo, Gulzar’s Mirza Ghalib (as a fakir in 1988), Ghar Jamai (1997), Shaktimaan (1998), Vishnu Puran (2000) and Powder (2010).

Beyond film and television, Javed Khan was active in theatre. He had been associated with the Indian People’s Theatre Association since 1972, taking on duties as actor, director and general secretary over the years. Later in his career he shifted some of his focus to teaching, mentoring aspiring actors. He served on the acting faculty at the Zee Institute of Media Arts in Mumbai and trained young performers who wanted to enter the industry.

Javed Khan collaborated with many leading names in Bollywood across his long career, sharing screen space with actors such as Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Govinda, Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. He appeared in a music video for the 1984 film Duniya, and was part of the ensemble of Lagaan, the film that went on to receive an Academy Award nomination.

Javed Khan was married and is survived by a son and a daughter. He stood about 170 cm tall (approximately 5 feet 7 inches) and had black eyes and black hair. He held Indian nationality and his zodiac sign was Aries.

Death

Javed Khan Amrohi died on 14 February 2023 in Mumbai. He had been suffering from breathing problems for about a year and was receiving treatment at Surya Nursing Home in suburban Mumbai. Filmmaker Ramesh Talwar confirmed that he passed away at the hospital when both his lungs failed.
