Javed Miandad was born on 12 June 1957 in Karachi, Pakistan. He grew up in a family with strong ties to cricket; his father worked in roles connected to cricket administration and had been involved in the sport before the family settled in Karachi after the Partition. Miandad’s upbringing in a cricket-loving household laid the foundation for a senior international career that would make him one of Pakistan’s most notable batsmen.

Career

Miandad made his One Day International debut on 11 June 1975 against the West Indies at Edgbaston and played his first Test on 9 October 1976 against New Zealand at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. He was a right-handed batsman who also bowled occasional right-arm leg break.

Across a long Test career spanning 124 matches, Miandad compiled 8,832 runs from 189 innings at an average of 52.57. His Test record includes a highest score of 280 not out, six double centuries, 23 centuries and 43 half-centuries. He struck 704 fours and 34 sixes in Test cricket and took 17 Test wickets, with best match figures that include a five-wicket haul.

In the limited-overs format he played 233 ODIs, scoring 7,381 runs at an average of 41.70 with a strike rate of 67.01. His highest ODI score was 119 not out; he registered eight ODI centuries and fifty fifties while hitting 449 fours and 44 sixes and facing 11,014 deliveries. Miandad holds a number of landmark achievements for Pakistan. He remains the country’s second-highest run-scorer in Tests and played more Tests for Pakistan than any other player to date. His Test batting average never dipped below 50 over the course of his career. He is the only batsman to have scored a century in both his first and his hundredth Test, and he set multiple "fastest-to" milestones for Pakistan in reaching 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 Test runs. He was the first Pakistani to reach career milestones of 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 and 8,000 Test runs, and he was the first Pakistani to accumulate 5,000 ODI runs. Miandad also played in six Cricket World Cups between 1975 and 1996.

For his services to cricket, he was awarded the Pride of Performance by the Government of Pakistan in 1986 and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1992. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on 1 March 2009 and later named to the Pakistan Cricket Board Hall of Fame in 2021.
