Jay Uday Kotak was born on 11 September 1989 in Mumbai. He grew up in a business family with roots in Gujarat. His father, Uday Kotak, is the founder and managing director and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, and his mother, Pallavi Uday Kotak, is an entrepreneur and an accomplished mountaineer. Jay attended The Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai from 1993 to 2007.

Jay pursued higher education internationally. He earned a BA in History and Economics from Columbia University in New York, where he studied from 2008 to 2011.
