Early life and background

Jay Amit Shah was born on 2 September 1988 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He completed a B. Tech degree from Nirma University in Ahmedabad. As a young man he trained in cricket for a short period under former Gujarat coach Jayendra Sehgal, reflecting an early interest in the sport.

Career

After finishing his education, Shah entered the family business, which dealt in PVC pipes. Around 2004 he incorporated a trading firm, Temple Enterprises Pvt Ltd, following an early exposure to trading and business that echoed his father's pre-political career as a stockbroker.

Shah’s involvement in cricket administration began in 2009 when he joined the Gujarat Cricket Association as an executive member. He was elected joint secretary of the association in 2013. During his term he oversaw projects including work on the Narendra Modi Stadium and inaugurated the GCA Indoor Academy.

In 2015 Shah moved into national-level administration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, joining the board’s finance and marketing committees. That same year he acquired a majority stake in Kusum Finserve, a stock trading and marketing consultancy. Temple Enterprises Pvt Ltd was shut down in October 2016.

Shah stepped down as joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association in September 2019 and was elected secretary of the BCCI a month later, becoming the youngest person to hold that post. He represented the BCCI at ICC CEC meetings beginning in December 2019.

In January 2021 he was appointed president of the Asian Cricket Council, again becoming the youngest to hold that office. As BCCI honorary secretary, on 27 October 2022 he announced equal match fees for India’s men’s and women’s players across Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals, describing pay equity as a commitment to women cricketers.

In August 2024 Shah was appointed unopposed as chairman of the International Cricket Council for a three-year term beginning 1 December 2024, a role in which he became the youngest person to assume the position. He left the BCCI in December 2024.
