Jaya completed undergraduate studies at The Government College for Women in Thiruvananthapuram, studying mathematics, physics and chemistry, with Malayalam as an optional subject. She later pursued engineering studies at the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET) and took courses at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
