Early life and backgroundJayadev Galla was born on 24 March 1966 in Diguvamagham, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. He spent much of his youth in the United States, where he completed secondary education at Westmont High School and earned a BA in political science and economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. During his college years he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
After finishing his education, Galla worked in the United States as an international sales executive for GNB Battery Technologies. He returned to India in 1992 and joined his family’s business, taking responsibility for sales and service operations and helping to build the company’s automotive battery business.
Career
Galla rose through leadership roles at Amara Raja group and its battery division. In 1992 he and his father entered a joint venture with Johnson Controls to launch the battery business that became Amara Raja Batteries Limited (ARBL). He became managing director of ARBL in 2003 and later assumed the role of vice chairman. In August 2013 he was appointed vice chairman of the wider Amara Raja group.
Under his stewardship the Amara Raja battery brand, Amaron, became established in both automotive and industrial battery markets in India. In 2021 the ARBL board moved to broaden the business into green technologies, creating an ‘Energy SBU’ focused on lithium-ion batteries, energy storage systems and EV chargers as part of a strategic shift toward energy and mobility solutions.
Galla entered electoral politics in 2014 when he joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
