Jayant Chaudhary was born on 27 December 1978 in Dallas, Texas, and is Indian by nationality. He grew up with family connections to Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, which is described as his hometown. He comes from a political family: his grandfather was Chaudhary Charan Singh and his father was Chaudhary Ajit Singh, a former union minister. He led protests in 2011 against land acquisitions in parts of Uttar Pradesh and pushed for changes to land acquisition law. In August 2011 he introduced a Private Member’s Bill on Land Acquisition in the Lok Sabha. He has also sought amendments to the Right to Information Act to increase transparency around public-private partnerships.

On environmental and energy matters, Chaudhary has advocated for stronger action on climate change and broader adoption of renewable energy. He participated in a 2011 conference in the European Parliament organised by the Climate Parliament and later urged the Indian government to target a 15 percent share for renewable technologies in the country’s electricity mix by 2020. He is a member of the Climate Parliament and Globe India and is involved with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research as a member of its General Board. He also co-chairs the ICCI Indo-British Forum of Parliamentarians and serves on the board of the Indo-Venezuela Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Chaudhary contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Mathura but lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Hema Malini. After the death of his father in 2021, he was appointed chairman of the Rashtriya Lok Dal on 25 May 2021 and prepared to lead the party into state-level contests, including the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
