Early life and background

Jayati Bhatia was born on 28 July 1970 in Orissa and spent her childhood in Delhi. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Delhi University. Raised in a Bengali family, she trained in Indian classical dance from an early age—initially in Bharatanatyam and later in Odissi under Mayadhar Raut. She studied dance for seventeen years and also took acting lessons for four years from the theatre director Ebrahim Alkazi.

Career

Bhatia began her professional journey in theatre. Her stage work led to meeting her future husband, theatre artist Kiran Bhatia, who encouraged her continued involvement in stage productions. She moved to Mumbai on 1 July 1997 to further pursue an acting career.

Her television debut came in 1995 with the series Challenge, in which she played Khushnuma. Across the late 1990s and 2000s she appeared in several Hindi television serials, including Tu Tu Main Main (1996), Itihaas (2000), Kasautii Zindagii Kay (2003), Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (2003), Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka (2005), and later Naamkarann (2018). She became widely recognized for portraying Nirmala "Mataji" Bharadwaj in the Colors TV serial Sasural Simar Ka.

Bhatia's film debut came in 2007 with 68 Pages, in which she played the role of Paayal. The film received international recognition at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival. She has appeared in a number of other films, including Barah Aana (2005), Rough Book (2015), and The Wishing Tree (2017). In 2012 she added voiceover work to her credits with a debut in the Bollywood film Barfi.

On digital platforms, Bhatia made her OTT debut with the series Punnch Beat in 2019 and went on to appear in web projects such as Bhoot Purva (2019) and Tansener Tanpura (2020). She was also seen as Dr. Sarla Desai in the SonyLIV series Girls Hostel (seasons 1 and 2).

Bhatia has taken part in reality and competitive TV as well. She competed in dance and performance-based shows over the years—she and partner Chhavi Mittal won the dance series Saas v/s Bahu in 2008, she participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season 5 in 2012, and she won Kitchen Champion season 4 in 2011. Her stage repertoire includes plays such as Mad About Money, Acid, and Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace. She also portrayed Kasturba Gandhi in the play Mahatma Vs Gandhi opposite Boman Irani.
