Early life and backgroundJayshree Vedantham Ullal was born on March 27, 1961. She spent her earliest years in London before her family moved to New Delhi, where she grew up and attended school. Her father, Sudarajan Vedantham, worked in academia and was associated with the development of engineering education in India. Ullal later moved to the United States with her family and completed higher education there, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University and a master’s degree in engineering management from Santa Clara University.
Career
Ullal began her career in the 1980s in the semiconductor industry, where she worked on high-speed memory chip design for companies including IBM and Hitachi. During the late 1980s she shifted into networking and marketing roles, joining firms such as Ungermann-Bass and later Crescendo Communications. Crescendo was acquired by Cisco Systems, and at Cisco she rose through roles focused on enterprise markets, wiring-closet switching, datacenter backbone technologies, and customer-premises equipment for WAN access.
While at Cisco, Ullal helped expand the company’s LAN switching business and oversaw numerous mergers and acquisitions. She became senior vice president of Data Center & Switching and left Cisco in 2008 after a long tenure.
In October 2008 Ullal joined Arista Networks as president and CEO. At the time Arista was a young cloud-networking company with limited revenues and fewer than 50 employees.
