Early life and background

Jeevan Jyot Kaur was born on 20 August 1971 in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, and is associated with Amritsar as her hometown. She completed her postgraduate studies in English and then earned an LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University. Her educational background also includes time at Government College, Amritsar.

Before entering active politics, Kaur was involved in social initiatives and education. She served as chairperson of the Shri Hemkunt Education Society in Amritsar, an organization focused on supporting economically disadvantaged community members. She has also been associated with programs addressing menstrual health and hygiene in Amritsar, including work with the EcoShe Menstrual Health Programme.

Career

Kaur joined the Aam Aadmi Party in March 2016 and took on several party responsibilities over the following years. She was the only female volunteer from her city to manage the Majitha campaign during the 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections and later served as a co-president of the party’s state women’s wing. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections she acted as a campaign coordinator, and in 2020 she worked for a short period as campaign coordinator for a Rajinder Nagar constituency candidate.

Within the AAP Punjab unit she has also served as a state spokesperson for the Amritsar North constituency. In 2022 she contested the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections and won the Amritsar East seat on 10 March 2022. In that election she secured 39,520 votes, defeating prominent opponents from other parties.

Outside of electoral politics, Kaur has held leadership roles in civic and business ventures. In 2013 she became managing director of Kids Bulletin Pvt. Ltd. In 2015 she was named president of the People’s Forum for Justice, Amritsar, and later that year she joined the ALL Ladies League as a chapter chair.
