Jeremy Lalrinnunga Biography
Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga Ralte from Aizawl, Mizoram, rose from a childhood interest in strength sports to become India's first male Youth-Oly
Early life and backgroundJeremy Lalrinnunga Ralte was born on 26 October 2002 in Aizawl, Mizoram. He grew up in a family with strong ties to sport: his father, Lalmaithuava Ralte, worked for the Public Works Department in Aizawl and had been a national junior boxing champion, and several of Jeremy’s brothers are boxers. Jeremy spent his childhood in Aizawl and developed an early interest in physical training and combat sports.
He began formal training very young, first learning boxing at his father’s academy. Around the same time he began watching boys train with weights at a local gym, an experience that shifted his focus toward weightlifting. He sought out coaching and started structured weightlifting practice under Malsawma Khiangte, who introduced him to balancing and technique exercises using long bamboo poles before moving on to conventional weights.
At age nine Jeremy was identified through talent scouting by the Army Sports Institute in Pune and continued his development there. He later trained at the Indian national camp in Patiala under coach Vijay Sharma as he progressed through youth and junior levels.
Career
Jeremy made his international debut in 2016 and quickly built a record of success across youth and junior competitions. He won medals at the IWF Youth World Championships, the Asian Youth and Junior Championships, the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Championships, and domestic events such as the Khelo India Youth Games.
The high point of his early career came at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Competing in the men’s category, Jeremy won the gold medal with a combined total of 274 kg, achieved through a 124 kg snatch and a 150 kg clean and jerk. That victory marked him as the first Indian male athlete to secure a Youth Olympic gold in his category. Earlier years had already seen him on the podium at the Commonwealth Youth Championships and the Commonwealth Junior Championship in Gold Coast, as well as a silver at the IWF Youth World Championships in Penang.
Coaches who guided his development include Malsawma Khiangte, Zarzokema, and Vijay Sharma. In recognition of his achievements, he received the GoSports Foundation Annual Sports Award in 2021.
