Early life and background

Jhanak Shukla was born on 24 January 1996 in New Delhi, India. Her family relocated to Mumbai when she was six years old. She grew up in a household connected to film and television: her father, Haril Shukla, worked as a documentary filmmaker, and her mother, Supriya Shukla, is an actress.

Jhanak completed a broad course of formal education in India. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Bhavans College in Mumbai, followed by a master's degree in ancient Indian history research and archaeology from Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute in Pune. She also holds an MBA from NMIMS Global, Mumbai.

Career

Jhanak began working as a child model and actor. She walked the ramp for a commercial brand at age four and appeared in advertisements, including one for ICICI when she was five. Early television work included a role in the children’s series Son Pari and parts in other children’s shows such as Hatim. In 2002 she acted in a Malayalam serial titled Aalipazham, in which she portrayed a central character.

Her most widely recognized television role came in 2003, when she played the title character in Karishma Kaa Karishma, an Indian adaptation of the 1980s American series Small Wonder. That same year she made her Bollywood debut in the film Kal Ho Na Ho, playing Gia Kapur, the adopted daughter of Jaya Bachchan’s character.

Jhanak continued to take on small-screen and film projects through the mid-2000s. In 2006 she appeared in Deadline: Sirf 24 Ghante and had a role in the international film One Night with the King. She also appeared in a music video with the band Parikrama.

Although active as a child actor and model, Jhanak stepped back from acting to focus on her education. She has said that after Son Pari she shifted priorities toward studies and chose not to pursue acting as a full-time career. Years later she returned to screen work in limited capacity: in 2012 she took part in the reality-based crime series Gumrah: End of Innocence, and in 2019 she appeared in four short films — Bol Ke Lab Azaad Hain Tere, Father’s Day Tribute, Maa Hoon Main, and U-Turn — projects produced and directed by her parents.

Beyond performance, Jhanak has worked in the art world and in retail entrepreneurship. From February to May 2022 she served as Art Gallery Manager at Fidelitus Gallery in Bengaluru. In July 2022 she launched a venture called Roomaal, which produces and sells handkerchiefs, organic soaps, bookmarks, and face masks.

Jhanak has described a longstanding interest in history and archaeology, which influenced her decision to pursue academic studies rather than continue acting full time. In a 2021 interview she spoke about considering a quieter life and potential work in a museum abroad.
