Early life and background

Jhye Avon Richardson was born on 20 September 1996 in Murdoch, Western Australia. He grew up in a sporting household with two older siblings and attended Emmanuel Catholic College, graduating in 2013. From a young age he played cricket in the backyard with his brother and also turned to local rugby as a teenager to build strength and fitness.

Richardson’s physical profile is notable for a height of about 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm), blue eyes and light brown hair. He has been described by teammates and coaches as a determined athlete who focused on developing pace despite early doubts about his suitability for fast bowling based on traditional expectations of body type.

Career

Richardson progressed through Western Australia’s youth pathway, representing state sides at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 levels between 2013 and 2016. He featured for Australia’s Under-19 team in 2015 and took part in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.

He made his first-class debut for Western Australia in 2015–16 at age 19 and quickly made an impact in domestic T20 cricket. Injuries have interrupted his career at times. A shoulder injury sustained in an ODI against Pakistan ruled him out of the 2019 World Cup and Ashes campaigns, and a hamstring problem required surgery in 2023 that prevented him from recovering in time for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
