Early life and background

Jiiva was born Amar Choudary on 4 January 1984 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Chennai in a family involved in the film business: his father is producer R. B. Choudary and his mother is Mahjabeen. Jiiva’s heritage includes Tamil roots on his mother’s side and Rajasthani ancestry from his father’s side. He attended Adarsh Senior Secondary School in T. Nagar, Chennai, and pursued a course in multimedia graphics.

Career

Jiiva’s screen journey began very young; he appeared as a child actor in the Tamil film Cheran Pandiyan (1991). He returned to films as a lead with Aasai Aasaiyai (2003), produced by his family’s banner. Early in his career he also played the lead in the Tamil film Thithikudhe in the same year.

A breakthrough came with the 2005 film Raam, where he played the character Ramakrishnan and gained wider recognition. Over the following years he established himself in Tamil cinema with commercially and critically noticed roles in films such as Siva Manasula Sakthi (2009), Ko (2011), Endrendrum Punnagai (2013), Pokkiri Raja (2016), and Gypsy (2020).

Outside Tamil films, Jiiva has worked in Malayalam cinema; he appeared in Keerthi Chakra (2006) as Havildar Jaikumar. He also took part in Hindi cinema: in 2021 he portrayed former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth in the Hindi biographical sports film 83.

As an actor he has earned industry recognition, including the Asianet Best Star Pair Award for Keerthi Chakra and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for Neethaane En Ponvasantham (2012). Reports list his film fee around Rs. 2–3 crore per film as of 2019.

Personal life and interests

Jiiva married Supriya, an interior designer, on 21 November 2007. The couple have a son named Sparsha Choudary. His family includes several members active in film production and acting: brothers Suresh Choudary, Jeevan Choudary and actor-producer Jithan Ramesh Choudary.

Away from the camera, Jiiva has a long-standing interest in music, especially rock and heavy metal from his younger years. He is trained in Chinese martial arts with a specialization in Kung Fu and maintains a daily fitness routine. He is known to enjoy cricket and badminton in his spare time.
