Early life and backgroundJijoy Pulikal Rajagopalan was born on 1 September 1976 in Irinjalakuda, Kerala. Raised in a family that supported his artistic pursuits, he attended Sree Narayana Higher Secondary School in Irinjalakuda before continuing his studies at Christ College for pre-degree work. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Calicut and a Bachelor of Theater Arts from the School of Drama, Thrissur.
Jijoy later completed both an MA and an M.Phil in drama and theatre arts at Pondicherry Central University, where he finished his postgraduate studies with top honors. Even as a student he was active in theatre competitions and was recognized repeatedly for his stage performances.
Career
Jijoy’s stage experience dates back to the late 1980s when he performed in plays such as Yadhartha Velakkaran. Over the years he built a career that spans theatre, television, film and dubbing work. He is known for early television work including the serial Innocent Kadhakal and made his Malayalam film debut in Niram (1999). He has also provided dubbing for films, including a credited dubbing role in Shikkar (2010).
A significant chapter in his career began with a multinational staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that brought him international exposure. From 2006 through 2009 he portrayed roles including Oberon and Theseus in a Tim Supple–directed production that toured widely and was staged at venues such as the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. That project involved hundreds of performances across many countries and was produced with support from organizations including the British Council.
Beyond performance, Jijoy has combined practice with teaching. Since May 2014 he has been an associate professor in the acting department at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he has been involved in training the next generation of actors.
