Early life and background

Jitesh Mohan Sharma was born on 22 October 1993 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He grew up in a middle-class family; his father is Mohan Sharma, originally from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, and his mother is Ashima Sharma. He has a younger brother named Nitesh. Jitesh attended Golden Kids English High School and went on to complete a graduate-level education. He speaks Hindi, Marathi and English.

As a youngster he considered a career in the armed forces and joined his school cricket team partly because playing at the state level offered a small advantage for armed forces entrance tests. That decision led him to pursue cricket more seriously after successive selections in age-group trials.

Career

Jitesh established himself in junior cricket with a standout performance in the 2012–13 Cooch Behar Trophy, when he scored heavily and earned promotion to Vidarbha’s senior side in 2013. He made his List A debut for Vidarbha in the 2013–14 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 27 February 2014 against Rajasthan, and his T20 debut followed on 31 March 2014 against Uttar Pradesh in Nagpur. His first-class debut came on 1 October 2015 in the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy versus Odisha.

A right-handed wicketkeeper-batter known for a wide range of strokes, Jitesh has often batted in the top order for Vidarbha across formats. He was the third-highest run-scorer in the 2015–16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 343 runs at a strong strike rate, including a century and two fifties. He finished as Vidarbha’s top run-scorer in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 298 runs in seven matches.

Jitesh’s domestic form brought Indian Premier League interest. Mumbai Indians acquired him at the 2016 auction, and he was part of Mumbai Indians’ squad when the franchise won the 2017 IPL season, though he did not play in any matches for the team and was released after the season. At the February 2022 IPL auction he was picked by Punjab Kings. He made his IPL match debut for Punjab Kings on 3 April 2022 against Chennai Super Kings, scoring 26 off 17 balls and striking multiple sixes to help his side to victory. Across about ten IPL appearances for Punjab Kings he scored 234 runs at a high strike rate, including a tally of boundaries and sixes that underlined his aggressive approach.

At the international level, Jitesh received selection to India’s T20 squads. He was named in the T20I squad for India’s three-match series against Sri Lanka in January 2023 as a replacement after an injury to another player, and he made his T20I debut for India on 3 October 2023 against Nepal.
