Jitin Prasada Biography

Kunwar Jitin Prasada is an Indian politician from Uttar Pradesh who served in multiple Union minister of state posts, began his parliamentary career in the

Early life and background

Kunwar Jitin Prasada was born on 29 November 1973 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family with deep ties to Indian public life: his father, Jitendra Prasada, was a senior Congress leader, and other relatives have held legislative and civil-service roles. Prasada attended The Doon School in Dehradun before completing a commerce degree at Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, and an MBA from the International Management Institute in New Delhi.

Career

Prasada began his political work with youth organisations and moved into electoral politics in the early 2000s. He entered the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2004, winning from Shahjahanpur. Over successive terms he held a number of junior ministerial portfolios at the Union level: Minister of State for Steel (from April 2008), Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas (from May 2009), Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways (from January 2011), and Minister of State for Human Resource Development (from October 2012 until May 2014).

His parliamentary constituencies changed due to delimitation: after Shahjahanpur was affected, he contested and won from Dhaurara in Lakhimpur Kheri district. He is credited in public records with initiatives such as advocating for broad-gauge rail links in his region and participating in local industrial projects.

Prasada lost his parliamentary seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections to a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. He remained active in Congress affairs thereafter, speaking on issues such as the economic and social effects of demonetisation and working within party structures, including an appointment as AICC general secretary for West Bengal in 2021.

On 9 June 2021 he left the Indian National Congress and formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, an event marked by meetings with senior BJP leaders. His move was described at the time as politically significant for Uttar Pradesh, where his presence was seen as helpful to BJP outreach among Brahmin voters. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he won the Pilibhit seat in Uttar Pradesh.

Public profile

Prasada has been associated with social and cultural activities in his home region, including work through a family-linked foundation. His personal interests have been described as ranging from reading and travel to wildlife and sports such as horse riding and water sports. He is married to Neha Seth, a political journalist; the couple married on 14 February 2010. He has one sister, Janhavi Prasada.

Latest updates

After more than a decade of parliamentary and ministerial service under Congress, Prasada’s high-profile switch to the BJP in June 2021 marked a new phase in his political life. He was later successful in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, returning to the lower house as the MP for Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh.
